Hi all I have a Gal mk1 1.9TDI Aspen 97,

The problem I have noticed is that sometimes when I pull away there is a knocking or clunk noise from the rear, this also happens if I reverse the noise is at the rear only. Any ideas what this could be caused by? Cheers in advance for any help.

I believe the clunk noise is coming from the rear axil area if that helps finding the answer to my problem.

Sorry if it seems obvious but, have you checked that your spare wheel is "tight" up to the body? If it is loose it could swing a bit and bang against the bodywork, though I would also expect it to happen when braking as well.

Good point by Silverbeast - check the spare tyre is secure first.

otherwise one of the following:

rear arm bush(es)

rear subframe bush or mount (you have to remove the spare wheel to check this)

rear anti roll bar bushes

all pretty easy and cheap to fix

If you take the car to somewhere like kwikfit they will have a look and tell you what needs changing (it will be cheaper to get it done at an independent)

These are the bits in question

Thank you for your replies, The spare tyre is what I checked first but no movement at all from that so will take it to be checked for the other options, Thank you will let you know the outcome.
